Super-Pets Helps Save D.C's Reputation

A planet is exploding, and there is a baby on the ship set to escape, and right before the top closes, a dog slips in to go with the boy to Earth, and that dog is Kyrpto. Superman and Kyrpto both grow up and become a dynamic crime fighting duo, and they spend a large amount of their time saving people’s lives, but a wrench has been thrown into their perfect lives, Louis Lane. Superman is in love, and it is making Kyrpto jealous. He no longer has a tv watching partner, and he does not get as many pets. Then an evil Guinea Pig, Lulu, gets superpowers from a new type of kryptonite, and she then proceeds to poison Kyrpto, and she depowers Superman with a piece of Kryptonite. The only problem in Lulu’s plan, is that when she got her powers, she also accidently gave them to the other pets in the shop waiting to be adopted too. So now this rag tag group of misfits must save the Justice League before it is too late.

There seems to be a couple of take aways from this movie, and they have a similar message. In the movie Superman starts to hang out with Louis more, and Kyrpto gets pushed to the side. So this is like when one of your best friends starts dating someone, and they start spending more time with them, instead of hanging out with you, so you have to find a new way to spend your time, like by saving the Earth. We have all been there.

It could also be used as an allegory for when you go off to college and leave your family behind. Kyrpto must leave Superman behind, well Superman gets kidnapped, and Kyrpto has to go out and make new friends, or as they call it in the fantasy story world, a found family. So he makes a strong bond with these other animals who helped to protect him when he lost his powers, and once he gets his powers back they still continue to be by his side. It is like going to college or moving somewhere new and finding a group of people to get close with.

The cast was loaded. From the animated Super Pets to the Superheroes, just about everyone was a big name. The closest thing the real world has to a Dynamic Duo is Kevin Hart and Dwyane the Rock Johnson, and they showed out in this film. I feel like it had been a while since they had made something that was funny, but they worked well together in this one. Their personas fit the dogs that they were playing.

I originally had this as my best animated film of the year so far, but I forgot about Lightyear. I still think that Lightyear was a better film. It had better animation, and it told the story slightly better. The biggest thing that I felt like Super Pets needed to improve was the animation style of the people. The pets looked great, and the actions scene worked pretty well too, but the heroes and the normal people just did not look right, but maybe that was their way of saying that the focus should be on the pets not the people. The only qualm I had with the pets was Kyrpto’s nose. It was way too big and pink, but that is just a small note.

When I was a kid, I loved dogs, so when I found out there was a dog version of Superman, I was incredibly excited and became obsessed. Then they created a TV show on Cartoon Network. Sadly, it was very short lived and only lasted two seasons, but I enjoyed those two seasons. The lineup of pets in the show was also different. It was more dog centric, whereas Super Pets is a more eclectic collection. The old cursing turtle was a nice addition.

There was also an evil cat in this movie, which reminded me of Sox, from Lightyear, but it was eviler. It had an adorable voice as it tried to destroy the pets and blew up cars. Always a good touch to make something sound so innocent but have terrible intentions. I wish that this cat would have had more screen time than the evil hamster Lulu. Lulu was decent, but she was not as good comedically. They also kept the story line very Superman centric; it was basically Superman vs. Lex Luthor, Lulu was a former test animal in Lex’s lab. So I feel like they had some serious room for creativity, but they stuck with a typical Superman villain.

One big strength for this movie came from their references. They made a ton of references, some were more for the adult audience, and the jokes seemed to land well, and the jokes that were more geared for the kids did an excellent job as well. I always love sitting in a theater full of people and hearing the enjoyment of all involved. It makes for a much better experience. This is the best animated dog movie of the year; it puts Paws of Fury to Shame.

This is an excellent family movie, and I would recommend going to see it. D.C outperforms Marvel with their animated content, except for Spiderverse, that is undefeated. Any movie that revolves around animated dogs and superheroes should kill at the box office, and it is doing well. It is in first place, but Nope did stay strong in its second weekend, and Thor Love and Thunder is still putting up a decent number considering the recent releases to theaters.

If you have read this far, and you were like man I really liked animated superhero shows when I was a kid, but I wish there was more adult related superhero content, have no fear, there are good things out there to watch. Harley Quinn season three just started on HBO Max. It is very adult comedy, and the first two seasons were great! So I have high hopes for season three. Also Invincible on Amazon, which came out, a little over a year ago is one of the best shows I have watched recently, and I would highly recommend watching it. Neither of these fit my typical tv watching regiment, but they are both excellent and worth checking out.
